The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are tonight, and in honor of the most wild night in music, we've taken a long trip down memory lane to the iconic 1999 VMAs, the ultimate entertainment experience. That year, the VMAs were so much more than an awards show: they were a gaudy slice of cultural history. A new millennium was just around the corner, teeming with possibility, and if your Y2k bunker was good to go, the only thing you had to worry about was whether you were more of a Britney or a Christina fan.
The VMAs may look a little different tonight with a global pandemic unfolding around us, but if all goes well, in 20-plus years we should be able to look back on those pictures and think, "What the heck were we all thinking?" And for more on the VMAs, check out these 20 Shocking Facts About the MTV VMAs You Definitely Never Knew.
